CLIMATE LITIGATION: ONSHORE OIL IN TARANAKI

We have undertaken a case challenging the legality and rationale of onshore permits granted to explore and extract oil and gas from the Taranaki Region.

Whilst our challenge failed at the High Court, we are awaiting a Court of Appeal, where our case was heard on appeal in May 2023.

SUBMISSIONS TO INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

Students for Climate Solutions partnered with UK Youth Climate Coalition to file a request with the International Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor to investigate BP for climate change as a crime against humanity.

The claim has been dismissed, but we remain steadfast in our advocacy for expanding the Court’s jurisdiction to recognize environmental destruction as a crime against humanity. Additionally, we are actively exploring other avenues to achieve this critical goal.

ADVOCACY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES AT THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

In addition to our legal work, the team at SFCS is committed to advocating for environmental crimes to be addressed by the International Criminal Court.

We believe that the destruction of our planet's ecosystems should be recognized and prosecuted as a serious violation of international law. We have specifically advocated for environmental destruction to be classified as a crime against humanity, and for the Court to address the specific harms environmental destruction and climate change has on children.
